To Whome It My Concern

Personal Statement About Me, My MOTHER and my brothers!

I am writing to tell about a great person who deserves her time in the sun. I am talking about my mother, Stacy Scruggs, Morgan (1514 Yancey Street, Tallahassee, Florida 32303: Phone number-850-222-9372). She is a single parent that has proved that with a good heart and hard work anything is possible. She has more love in her little finger that most people have in their whole body!

I am no stranger to adversity nor am I with OUT facing obstacles during the early stages of my life. Growing up in a single parent household was challenging enough, but not being able to reap the benefits of a father and son relationship was definitely a disappointment.

I can remember nights of confusion and fear from boisterous arguments at night between my parents. This was hard to digest as a child, but probably was better that I was not of age to fully understand the process and complications of a divorce. Reality came to me when I was about 6 years old, and soon enough my father was dismissed permanently from our home. My mother had a tough job ahead in raising four young boys in a poverty stricken neighborhood, and keeping us in school despite the many negative factors of single parent homes.

The odds were definitely against us, but my mother was determined to overcome the obstacle and provide her four children with a well rounded upbringing. I have heard her crying many a night when times got really bad. But she never allowed this to become a part of her boyz problem in being a family and moving forward. She always taught us to be prepared to serve God, humankind, family, and self!

She was not able to finish her college education because of the importance she place on our early childhood development, which was at a critical stage during this time of life. However, she was able to secure a full time administrative job for an elementary school with a high school diploma and three years of college.

I can remember feeling very uncomfortable of this situation of my mother working at the same school I attended. Eventually my brothers and I were rewarded because my mother’s presence here in our school. It was a gift that money can’t buy, and was a gift that has kept on giving. I personally felt that it established a foundation of self-confidence and optimism.

She was able to institute a typical family oriented setting with the necessities of food, clothing and shelter. To be more specific, we didn’t feel like a low-income poor family because of the love and support coming from her and my brothers.

My life was surrounded by a variety of loving individuals, which included Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandmother and a Grandfather. They all made significant contributions to my individual growth.  We were able to form a very strong family bond that couldn’t be easily broken. There were times when I did feel insecure about having a father absent from our home and not being able to receive expensive items like some of the children around me. Nevertheless, I was able to become more appreciative for the affection and attention that I received from my family members. Each member played a special role in a particular endeavor whether it was pursing sports or other leisure activities throughout grade school. Although my father was not able to support us much financially, it really didn’t hinder our progression as a whole. The material things were still made available. My mother worked very hard to be able to purchase a car for us when we reached high school. We were thankful for the simple things in life such as transportation and shelter over our heads. It was amazing that this super woman was firm in her decision of financing a house, especially after being recommended to public housing several times by the social services.

My three brothers are older than me. They were good students and athletes. They were all on the varsity first-string football and run track. Micha my third brother get drafted by a university and attended college at u. Missouri and North Florida University. My brother Elisha served in the military in Afghanistan for one year after joining the National Guard of Florida! All four of us have managed to finished college by some means! Mother seemed to mange to attend all of the many activities in which her sons were involved. She even attended all of Micah’s games when he was in Missouri for the year.

What was even more extraordinary is that my friends found our home a better place to chill. Mom took this in the stride and added it to her long list of things to do. She also took on the task of working in school support events to make up for her lack of funds required to allow her boyz to participate! Mom also participates in many school related events. She never missed a meeting with our instructors. She must be truly a superwoman! She looked really tired at times. But she gave it a second effort.

In retrospect, I would not trade my past experiences and misfortunes for anything in the world. In fact, I believe because of my mother, this built inner strength, courage and launched an upbeat attitude towards achieving goals in life. Upon graduation, I was able to receive a college scholarship from the College Reach Out Program in Tallahassee, FL. This was the beginning of a new chapter; and I was looking forward in taking full advantage of opportunities, not just for myself, but also for my mother, who discovered this program that would provide the funds necessary for a college education. To be more specific, the scholarship was a TSIC, which offered a fully funded scholarship for 4 years of college education in the state of Florida. The first two years required me to attend Tallahassee Community College, then any University of my choice after completing my Associates of Arts degree. I am proud to say that I was able to complete my A.A. degree as a general transfer student in 2 years, and then went on to receive a bachelor’s of science in public relations from FAMUs School of Journalism and Graphic Communication.

My peers seemed very impressed that I was able to manage a job, full schedule of college courses and complete more than 5 internships while maintaining an acceptable GPA during my undergraduate period. When people ask how am I able to possess such a keen spirit for overcoming adversity: I simply state because my mother make to realized my potential and the fact that as human beings God has granted all of us the opportunity of life. So I plan to utilize my skills to the fullest not just to gain self-success, but to provide for my family and generations to come. As soon as my resources allow I intend to do something great for my mother, for she is my rock and my river!

My overall goals and objectives in life are underpinned with the intent to be of service to humanity as a whole. Therefore, any vocation I choose will be perfected to achieve the highest skill in that area in order to be a productive citizen of the United States. This is the foundation from my mother!

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for those in public administration are expected to increase significantly through the year 2014. However, now after my graduation the opportunities are few and far between. Again my mother kept me level. I came home as did many of my peers and mother has made me whole. God is good but mother is here. She must be an agent of a good God. Mother always get my three brothers and I together to fellowship and celebrate our family and good faith.

Because of my mom, I believe earning a graduate degree in this will be beneficial to providing a broad range of career opportunities and being prepared to provide a widespread service to the family, university, and nation. The job outlook in this time period seems to be waiting for some special person to move it back to the posterity for all position. Mother says that why can’t this person be one of her boys! I believe this. She has no doubt and high faith in her boys!

Because of the expected positions to become available in both governmental and non-profit sectors of an Economy, which is pushing toward service and new processes, American must be prepared to fit in somewhere. Right FAMU has the best offering to provide me with the skills and knowledge for success.

My mother tells me by completing the MASS program, I am will to gain knowledge about public policy, finance, urban planning, development and the human factor. Then I can apply these skills to secure a career in the great struggle to serve society.

My undergraduate degree in public relations will also be useful in the evaluation and implementation of planned programs of action for an organization both public and private. These two fields compliment each other, as they both focus on intangible factors such as providing services, setting or implementing policies. As a public relations student at FAMU’s School of Journalism, I was able to receive a diverse educational experience.

The courses in the program required you to learn all aspects of the powerful practice of journalism. It also prepared graduates for the emerging field of integrated marketing communication. This field basically is a combination of marketing, advertising, promotions and, of courses the people skills of public relations. It ensures that all forms of communications are carefully linked together to provide the tools to better serve the objectives of a company or organization.  I have had the opportunity of publishing articles in several media outlets nationally and experienced the power of this contribution. This accomplishment made me realize that writing is a powerful tool and has many purposes for a variety of fields including Public Administration. This skill gives me a competitive edge and can be helpful when it comes to making a contribution to the greater society.

I have tried to avoid being too self centered. But my mother has taught me to be high in self-concept and solid on the person she and our God expect us to be. My mother, Stacy Scruggs deserves a special reward here in her time! I wish that she could go back to college and finish the two years she needs to finish. However, It is my prayer that in your benevolence you can find it in your heart to help me provide my mother a much-deserved special reward-a day, an event or reward of college!! PLEASE!!!

I remain your admiring fan and fellow American!!

Sincerely,
